Abstract

Mathematics plays a fundamental role in universities, but its relevance and application vary significantly from discipline to discipline. In areas such as engineering, architecture and computer science, mathematics is essential for solving technical problems, and students tend to value it positively. However, they face difficulties in applying abstract concepts to practical situations, which requires a pedagogical approach that combines theory with practical exercises and technological tools. On the other hand, in disciplines such as social sciences, law and the arts, mathematics is perceived as a complementary tool, mainly used for data analysis. Resistance to learning mathematics and the perception that it is irrelevant are common barriers in these areas, underlining the need for pedagogical approaches that connect mathematics with professional practice in these disciplines. In disciplines such as the arts and education, although mathematics is viewed with less interest, its application in aspects such as design and teaching can be valued if properly contextualised. In the future, it is recommended to investigate customised pedagogical approaches that integrate mathematics in a more contextualised and applied way for each discipline, taking advantage of innovative technologies and didactic strategies adapted to the specific needs of students.
